Catholic Youth Organization Athletics

The Academy of St. Matthias the Apostle proudly offers students the opportunity to participate in Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) athletics, a program of the Archdiocese of Washington that promotes the development of the whole child—mind, body, and spirit.

CYO athletics provide students with a structured, faith-centered environment where they can grow in sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, discipline, and respect, while representing their school and parish community.

The Academy of St. Matthias the Apostle participates in CYO sports offerings as available and appropriate. Sports are typically organized by season and may include team practices, league play, and postseason tournaments.

Specific sports offerings, registration details, and timelines are shared with families prior to each season.

Mission of CYO

CYO athletics are rooted in the belief that sports are an extension of Catholic education. Athletics are viewed not simply as competition, but as an opportunity for character formation and Christian witness.

Through participation in CYO, students are encouraged to:

  • Compete with integrity and humility

  • Demonstrate respect for teammates, opponents, officials, and coaches

  • Develop healthy habits and physical fitness

  • Live out Gospel values both on and off the field

Eligibility & Participation

Students are expected to represent the school with pride and uphold the values of Catholic education at all practices, games, and events.

CYO programs are open to eligible students enrolled at the Academy of St. Matthias the Apostle, subject to:

  • Age and grade requirements set by the Archdiocese of Washington CYO

  • Academic and behavioral expectations

  • Completion of all required forms and clearances

Get Involved

Coaches & Volunteers

CYO coaches and volunteers play a vital role in the success of the program. All coaches and volunteers are required to:

  • Complete Archdiocese of Washington child protection requirements

  • Model positive behavior and Catholic values

  • Support student-athletes in growth, teamwork, and sportsmanship

Family Partnership

Families are an important part of the CYO experience. Parents and guardians are encouraged to support student-athletes by:

  • Promoting positive sportsmanship

  • Encouraging balance between academics, faith, and athletics

  • Supporting team and school expectations
