ASSESSMENT

In alignment with Archdiocesan guidelines, we use standardized assessments alongside classroom based evaluations to measure student progress, identify strengths, and support individual learning needs.

Our approach allows teachers to tailor instruction, support students at every level, and ensure each child is challenged and supported appropriately.

Standardized Assessment: NWEA MAP Growth

St. Matthias uses the NWEA MAP Growth assessment, a nationally recognized computexrized testing tool that adapts to each student’s individual ability level. This assessment provides meaningful data while reducing test fatigue and stress for students.

KEY BENEFITS INCLUDE:

  • Adaptive testing that adjusts to each student’s ability

  • Shorter testing sessions designed to minimize fatigue

  • Quick access to data so teachers can adjust instruction in real time

  • Clear, easy to understand reports for families

  • Long term progress tracking to support enrichment, tutoring, or additional support

MAP Growth is used with all learners, including students with diverse learning needs, and helps ensure instruction meets students where they are.

Testing Schedule

Students are assessed in mathematics and reading three times each school year.

Fall Assessment
Establishes baseline performance and learning goals

Winter Assessment
Measures progress and growth toward established targets

Spring Assessment
Evaluates overall achievement and academic growth over the year

In addition, students participate in a Faith Knowledge Assessment each April. This assessment measures understanding of Catholic teachings and concepts presented throughout daily religion classes.

Ongoing Classroom Assessment

  • Daily observations and class participation

  • Assignments, projects, and presentations

  • Quizzes, tests, and writing samples

  • Informal assessments to guide instruction

Standardized testing is just one part of how student progress is measured. Teachers also use:

This balanced approach ensures students are evaluated in multiple ways and given opportunities to demonstrate learning beyond a single test.

Reporting to Parents

Parents receive assessment results in a clear and easy to understand format. Reports provide insight into both achievement and growth, including:

  • Comparison to peers in a national norm group

  • Ability level independent of grade placement

  • Projected performance on grade level standards

  • Growth over time

  • Silent reading rate

  • Lexile reading level to help families select appropriate books

Teachers and administrators are available to discuss results and collaborate with families to support student success.
